The turning point came when she experienced a distressing panic attack on her 30th birthday. This prompted Chrissy to recognize the importance of addressing the underlying issues. She acknowledged that she hadn’t been taking the necessary steps to reach a better place in her life.

Metz explained, “I really needed to understand why I’ve been hurting my body with food, and all the things that come with that, which clearly means all the past trauma, all my parents’ unresolved issues, all of that came bubbling to the surface at 30 years old.”

She emphasized the significance of facing our unresolved issues, whether they stem from our own experiences or our parents’. According to Chrissy, these issues persist until we confront them directly. She noted, “The only way to go is through, and that’s a really hard concept because we don’t like to be uncomfortable. It is so uncomfortable to be uncomfortable.”

Metz expressed her gratitude for having access to mental healthcare, emphasizing the importance of her therapist in those moments. She shared that engaging in conversations with a mental health expert has been instrumental in her progress.

One valuable strategy she has adopted is journaling, specifically a practice called “journal speak.” This involves freely expressing all thoughts and feelings, sometimes on a computer for easy erasure.

Metz finds this process helpful in excavating and removing emotions, allowing her to address the core issues affecting her mental health.

Metz believes that the purpose of our existence is to grow and improve. She sees each day as an opportunity to become a better version of herself, understanding that the journey may not be flawless or straightforward but considers it worthwhile.

She appreciates the chance to address mental health issues through her role as Kate on the show “This Is Us.”

Metz believes that by educating people, whether through a TV show or a conversation, we can eliminate fear, shame, or guilt associated with mental health. She emphasizes the importance of this process in the overall journey towards better mental health, noting that the impact of “This Is Us” goes beyond what may be immediately apparent.
