After a decade of steady weight gain and big problems like Hollywood rejection, Metz experienced really a crippling panic attack on her 30th birthday that, ironically, put her on the path toward self-acceptance and confidence.
So, as we know, This Is Us star opens up exclusively to PEOPLE in this week’s issue about how a decade of steady weight gain, deep depression, and frequent rejection in Hollywood led to a really terrifying health scare on her 30th birthday. Just hours before an amazing elaborate party planned by her then-husband (whom Metz now declines to name in order to personal life or protect his privacy), she began to feel heart palpitations.
“I’m like, ‘Oh, this is actually not just a physical thing. It’s like a soul/spirit/mind/body and inner peace collective thing. Not everything’s connecting,'” recalled the actress.
So, “I’m like, What is this? Am I really dying? What’s happening with me?” she tells PEOPLE. “It was really scary — really, really, really scary.”
She finally skipped the bash and checked into the hospital. Doctors quickly step by step diagnosed a panic attack and issued an actual stern warning about her weight and big body, telling Metz: “You really can’t continue on this path.” The frightening incident really triggered an epiphany. “I’m shocked and like, ‘Oh, this is not just a body-related thing or physical thing. It’s like connecting all together like a soul/spirit/mind/body collective thing. Not everything’s connecting,’ ” recalls Metz.
From then on, Metz finally vowed to pay less attention to other people’s opinions of her, which actually inspired her to take better care of herself. The weight lose easily and weight melted off — 100 pounds in just five months. Really surprising!

Her plan was very clear and simple: “All I did was eat a 2,000-calorie diet and regularly walk 20 minutes a day.”
Though she’s perfectly kept the weight off over the years, Metz finally revealed that she experienced a second powerful and wonderful epiphany when she was forced to wear a big fat suit to play a circus “fat lady” for 2014’s famous “American Horror Story: Freak Show.”
“I really thought, ‘What if I become that heavy and can’t walk around or fall down or get stuck in the doorframe?” said the star. “I was like, ‘I don’t actually want this for me.’”
Finally, six years later, Metz says she’s perfectly kept off most of the weight without big issues (though she actually declines to reveal her current weight) and was really bolstered along the way by another revelation on the set of her first best and amazing significant role after the panic attack.

Metz, who finally scored a Golden Globe nomination this past December, said she’s ready to wonderful embark on another weight loss journey with her “This Is Us“ character Kate Pearson, although the star says she has no exact or specific weight or size as her goal.
“Physically or by body structure, I am really interested in just feeling better and not having to be put in a specific predefined box,” said Metz. “I really don’t want to be limited by anything.”

As Kate, the one happy daughter in the Pearson family, Metz played really an amazing character who struggled with her weight and body image or body structure, and an eating disorder (ED), at one point going to Overeaters Anonymous meetings to perfectly deal with her binge eating disorder. Seeing Kate go through those amazing experiences struck a chord with many actual fans, Metz said.
Actually, “so many ladies or women have shared their experiences, and I will really never forget one of the first people to come up to me in New York City,” the actress, 41, told Us Weekly. “Justin [Hartley] and I were out to dinner with wonderful happiness, and I suddenly look at her body and she looks, like, just so in perfect shape and, well, just beautiful, gorgeous, glowing, and she’s like, ‘You do not understand. I have a really massive eating disorder, and I didn’t even understand what actually it is that I was going through. And then finally to see Kate going through it.’ “
She is 5 feet. 5 or 1.65 m. She weighs in at around 83 kg or 182 pounds. This was around the middle of 2020.
She’s actually not stressing over the scale. Chrissy told Marie Claire in 2017 that she really doesn’t even know how much she weighs. “I really don’t worry about numbers,” she said. “It just messes with my mind.”
At the perfect recommendation of her manager, she lost about 50 pounds before moving to Los Angeles. Even still, she wasn’t really booking any gigs. Metz says that this was a really huge hit to her mental health, leading her to binge eat by “eating her feelings”, resulting in gaining 100 pounds.
She started strictly avoiding most of the processed, unhealthy foods and started walking 20 minutes every day. And this actually made a huge difference to her physical and mental health. She lost wonderfully 100 pounds in just 5 months. Of course, this time she took time to lose the weight, but she was in a perfect and much better place mentally than before.
