Why am I Still Breaking Out with a Good Skincare Routine

Breaking out despite a good skincare routine can be caused by several factors. One possible reason is skin purging, which happens when active ingredients in skincare products cause an increase in skin cell turnover, pushing excess dirt, oil, and buildup to the surface and revealing everything hiding beneath the skin. This process can cause an increase in breakouts, but it is a sign that the skincare routine is working properly.

Another possible reason is hormones, which can cause overactive glands to produce more oil, worsening acne. Dry skin can also cause acne breakouts, especially when using pore-clogging skincare products or due to humidity levels. Other factors that can worsen acne include using makeup, skin care, and hair care products that can cause acne, not washing your face, and consuming certain foods.

To prevent breakouts, it is important to follow a consistent skincare routine, use non-comedogenic and oil-free products, and avoid harsh scrubs that can irritate the skin. If home remedies or over-the-counter medication do not work, it is best to consult a dermatologist for advice on how to address acne without causing further dryness.

Based on your skin type, here are some skincare tips to help you maintain healthy and balanced skin:

Dry skin

  1. Stop baths and showers from worsening dry skin. Use warm water instead of hot, and apply moisturizer immediately after washing.
  2. Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser.
  3. Apply moisturizer daily, and use an ointment or cream rather than a lotion.
  4. Wear lip balm to protect your lips from dryness.

Oily skin

  1. Wash your face every morning, evening, and after exercise with a gentle, foaming face wash.
  2. Choose skin care products labeled “oil-free” and “noncomedogenic”.
  3. Use a gentle, non-comedogenic face wash.
  4. Avoid oil-based or alcohol-based cleansers.
  5. Apply moisturizer daily, and wear sunscreen outdoors.

Combination skin

  1. Cleanse daily with a mild, water-soluble facial cleanser.
  2. Use a toner to remove excess oil and help fight blackheads and blemishes.
  3. Exfoliate 2-3 times per week.
  4. Moisturize morning and night.
  5. Use a face oil at night.

Sensitive skin

  1. Avoid long, hot showers and limit bathing time to 5-10 minutes.
  2. Steer clear of highly-scented products and detergents.
  3. Use gentle soap-free cleansers that won’t disrupt the skin barrier.
  4. Avoid harsh exfoliants and chemical peels.
  5. Apply moisturizer often to help prevent dry skin.
  6. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen year-round.

In short, individual skin needs may vary, and it’s essential to find products that work best for your specific skin type. If your skin doesn’t improve with these tips, consider consulting a dermatologist for personalized advice.
